The African Refugee Club (ARC) was founded by Wheeling High School chemistry teacher, Pete Fischbach. Members of the club, in an effort to aid Angolan refugees forced to flee their homes and country because of a civil war, collected supplies to send to a refugee camp in Zambia. Contributors donated enough blankets, clothes, school and medical supplies to fill a 20 foot container. ARC, now sponsored by teachers Sara Strauss and Mariola Sobol and called Interact with Africa, continues their efforts. The club has raised enough funds to build two schools and fund one classroom in a new RISE school in rural Angola.
In May 2009, Interact with Africa sponsored a Walk through Africa, in which they used the banners and adapted the boolket from the RISE Benefit to give students the experience of what it is like in Angola, why millions of children are not in school, and how education changes lives.
